What is an AI agent?

2 min read
Short answer

An AI agent is software that carries out a task on its own, in several steps. For example, it reads an incoming email, looks up the relevant details and prepares a reply. The difference from a chatbot is that an agent doesn't just talk, it also does something. A person approves the result.

The word gets stuck on everything. The core is simple.

A chatbot talks, an agent does

A chatbot answers a question. An agent is given a task and carries it out: reading, looking things up, filling things in, preparing. To do that it uses the same programs you work with, such as your email and your calendar.

An example

An enquiry comes in. The agent reads what is being asked, checks whether the customer is already known, and prepares a draft reply. You read it and send it.

What it can't do

An agent doesn't understand your business the way an employee does. It makes mistakes, and it makes them with confidence. So let it prepare and let a person decide.

When a simple rule is enough

If a task always goes the same way, you don't need AI. A form comes in, a confirmation goes out: that is a fixed rule. You only need an agent when something has to be read and judged.
