How do I rank higher on Google?

2 min read
Short answer

You rank higher on Google by building pages that are about exactly what your customer types in, one page per service. Make sure the site is fast and works well on a phone, fill in your Google Business Profile completely and collect genuine reviews. Don't expect results in days. It takes weeks to months.

There is no trick, and nobody can guarantee a position. There is an order of work that almost always pays off.

1. One page per question

Google shows the page that best matches what someone types in. A single page listing all your services is a poor match for every search. Give each service its own page, written in the words your customer uses.

2. A site that works on a phone

Most people search on their phone. If your site loads slowly or they have to zoom in to read anything, they leave, and Google notices.

3. Your Google Business Profile

If you work in a particular area, this is often the quickest win. Fill in everything: category, opening hours, services and photos. Ask customers for a review and reply to each one.

4. Other sites pointing to you

A link from a trade association, a supplier or a local newspaper counts as a recommendation. Don't buy them. Earn them with something worth mentioning.

How long it takes

Google itself says some changes take effect within a few hours and others only after months. Allow weeks before you see anything.
